Front End Engineering & Design
FEED (Front End Engineering Design) means Basic Engineering which is conducted after completion of Conceptual Design or Feasibility Study. At this stage, before start of E.P.C (Engineering, Procurement and Construction),various studies,robust planning and design with accepted level of accuracy are carried to figure out :
This work is normally contracted to EPC Contractor or PMC Consultancy, as an optional
contract or through bidding. The budget allocated for this stage is called FEED
money. The product of the activity is called“FEED Package” which amounts up to
dozens of files and will be the basis of bidding for EPC Contract. The need to define the amount of capital monies required to carry out a given project allows the management to make a final decision
using economic incentives or costs.
It is important to reflect client’s intentions and project specific requirements in to the FEED Package without fail, in order to avoid significant change during EPC Phase. The FEED Work takes about 1 year in case of large sized project such as LNG plant. As it is essential to maintain close communication with client, it became a common practice that client stations at Contractor’s office during the work execution. In international project-financed projects, the lending institutions (Banks/Financiers)are the ones who set the level of accuracy required to evaluate a proposed loan.
Level of accuracy of information produced in this phase of project vary from one project to another project,location,type of project .Many Engineering companies take a risk by using the FEED to specify and purchase major equipment early in a project phase in order to save time and detail engineering – only to subsequently realize that the effort was a major mistake because of inherent project and scope changes later. Additionally, without detailed engineering done, a lot of project necessities will be left unattended and major mistakes and omissions are made. Therefore, there may exist other interpretations or needs for a FEED through various parts of the world.There is no engineering God or Court that fixes how all engineers should interpret or employ engineering tools. Everyone is left to use his/her ingenuity and common sense in applying the natural laws and resources found world-wide.
